Social change model with details

This page describes the Social Change Model of A. H. Astin which is used by the Institute for Leadership and Service at the University of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ.  The Social Change Model is graphically depicted as three ellipses, from small to large and the smaller inside the larger.  Each elipse contains three developmental components.

In the first, smallest elipse,  during the first two years of traditional baccalaureate study, the developmental focus is on three Individual Leadership Values. The first is Self Awareness & Reflection: Understanding ones talents, beliefs, values, emotions, and attitudes that allow one to appreciate and understand different leadership styles, take action and enhance critical thinking.  The second is Character and Integrity: Ability to make ethical decisions based on values, personal and communal, and act with honesty and consistency. The third is Compassion Through Service: Ability to empathize with and understand the needs of others.

In the second, medium elipse, during the second and third years, the developmental focus is on three Group Leadership Values. The first is Common Purpose: Ability to work together with others toward a shared goal. An understanding that a shared vision is important to group cohesion and community building.  The second is Developing Relationships: Developing mutual understanding and respect within the group and with the community through open, honest and in-depth dialogue.  The third is Team Building Through Service: Developing organizational and servant leadership skills and understanding ways to build strength within the group.

In the third, largest elipse, during the third and fourth years, the developmental focus is on three Community Leadership Values.  The first is Engagement with Diverse Communities: Ability to work alongside and appreciate people of diverse backgrounds, ethical, religious, racial, etc.  The second is Common Good and Social Justice: Having the ability to evaluate social issues and create strategies that incorporate community values and fairness for all.  The third is Social Change Through Service: Executing social change based on community values and fairness for all.

This page also describes The Institute”s Mission.  The University of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ’s Institute for Leadership and Service provides opportunities for all members of the UDM community to engage in social change for the common good.  The Institute upholds the ideals of our founders who believe in the promotion of justice and compassionate service to those in need as we are Transforming Lives to Lead and Serve.
