This page describes the Social Change Model of A. H. Astin which is used by the Institute for Leadership and Service at the University of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ.
It  begins with a description of The Institute”s Mission. The University of Detroit Mercy’s Institute for Leadership and Service provides opportunities for all members of the UDM community to engage in social change for the common good. The Institute upholds the ideals of our founders who believe in the promotion of justice and compassionate service to those in need as we are Transforming Lives to Lead and Serve.
The Social Change Model is graphically depicted as three ellipses, from small to large and the smaller inside the larger. Each elipse contains three developmental components.Â
In the first, smallest elipse, during the first two years of traditional baccalaureate study, the developmental focus is on the following three Individual Leadership Values. The first is Self Awareness & Reflection, the second is Character and Integrity, and the third is Compassion Through Service.
In the second, medium elipse, during the second and third years, the developmental focus is on the following three Group Leadership Values. The first is Common Purpose, the second is Developing Relationships, and the third is Team Building Through Service.
In the third, largest elipse, during the third and fourth years, the developmental focus is on the following three Community Leadership Values. The first is Engagement with Diverse Communities, the second is Common Good and Social Justice, and the third is Social Change Through Service.
