Basketball student-athletes earn Horizon League honors
Four Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ basketball student-athletes earned Horizon League recognition as the conference released its postseason awards Feb. 23.
The Titans men’s basketball team had three honorees as Antoine Davis was named First Team All-Horizon League, Bul Kuol earned Third Team laurels and Matt Johnson was named the Horizon League’s Sixth Man of The Year.
Kaela Webb represented the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ women’s basketball team by earning Third Team All-Horizon League honors.
The Horizon League’s postseason awards are voted on by the league’s head coaches.
Davis leads the Horizon League and is third in the nation in scoring at 23.3 points per game — up to 24.5 points in HL games — and also leads the league in 3-point field goals per game (3.45) and free-throw percentage (91.1%). He has scored in double figures in all 20 games on the year and tops his conference peers with 14 20-point games, as well as a league-best four 30-point outings.
Davis is the fifth Titan in University history to earn three All-Horizon League honors — joining Dwayne Kelley, Rashad Phillips, Brandon Cotton and Ray McCallum — and the second to be selected to the First Team three times (Phillips).
Kuol is 13th in the league in scoring at 15.5 points per game — up to 16.4 points in conference games — and also ranks sixth in 3-point field goals per game (2.4) and 11th in field-goal percentage (45.5%), while posting 4.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.3 steals per game. He has scored in double digits in 17 of his 20 games, posting four 20-point outings.
Johnson averaged 9.2 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists, while shooting 44.4% from the field, 40.8% from three and 94.4% at the free-throw line. On the season, he scored in double digits eight times, grabbed at least five rebounds in eight games and totaled at least three assists in three contests.
Johnson is the second Titan to win the Sixth Player of the Year joining Eli Holman in 2011-12.
Webb led the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ women’s basketball team in scoring (17.7 points per game) and minutes (34.5 minutes per game), and ranked first in the Horizon League in 3-pointers made per game (2.7). She scored more than 20 points on five different occasions.
Over the next three weeks, the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ men’s basketball team will look to make a run to the Horizon League title and earn an NCAA Tournament berth.
