Five-Year Bachelor-Master Program in Civil Engineering (BCE-MCE)

Description

The College of Engineering & Science offers a combined Bachelor of Civil Engineering/Master of Civil Engineering program. High school students can be admitted directly into this accelerated program.

Civil Engineering is the most diverse engineering field. Depending on the industry, you may work on: airports, bridges, buildings, canals, dams, environmental cleanup, excavations, harbors, highways, industrial facilities, landfills, construction or demolition, piers, pipelines, reservoirs, roads, site planning, tunnels, Navy Seabees, and water and wastewater treatment plants.

Civil engineers focus on making global sustainable systems. Our student projects make a difference in the world, such as environmental clean-up projects, rapid transit plans, or urban renewal assistance.

Since many engineering problems and solutions have roots in human behavior, you will learn communication skills, team working, ethics and decision making. Additionally, since engineering problems need practical solutions, our program includes co-operative job assignments in industry. The experience is valuable for your resume when seeking full-time employment.

As a part of the curriculum, students are exposed to all areas of civil and environmental engineering, including structures, transportation, geotechnical, hydrology and the environment.

The mission of the program is to provide a broad-based education and design experience that enables students to address complex and multi-faceted civil engineering problems. The program also seeks to provide students the fundamental tools to enable them to evolve in the profession in response to changing technology and societal needs and expectations.

In order to complete both the BCE and MCE degrees in five years, the student must (a) be very well prepared as an incoming freshman, ready to take our core engineering courses;  (b) satisfy all the admission criteria (see below), and (c) maintain a 3.25 GPA in order to take graduate level courses while still an undergraduate.

    Admission Into the Program

    Qualifications for the five-year Engineering program for new freshmen:

    • A minimum ACT composite score of 26, with a minimum of 22 in each section, and a minimum of 23 in the Mathematics section.  Or minimum SAT scores: 560 Mathematics; 560 ERW; and 1230 combined.
    • With ACT/SAT scores above: a high school grade point average of 3.4 overall on a 4.0 point scale, and the same for the combined mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology courses.
    • Without ACT/SAT scores: a high school grade point average of 3.6 overall on a 4.0 point scale, and the same for the combined mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology courses.
    • Students must place into appropriate-level freshmen courses at Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ in order to be able to complete both the bachelor and master degrees in five years.

    Qualifications for the five-year Engineering program for current Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ juniors/seniors:

    • Students with a GPA of 3.25 and 95 credit hours can apply for the program near the end of their third year or in the beginning of their fourth year.
    • Students must be on-track to complete their undergraduate degree in four years.  (Some exceptions apply.)
    • If accepted into the program, students may take up to nine graduate credits in their fourth year that will count towards both undergraduate and graduate requirements.
    • In their fifth year, students will be registered as full-time graduate students, which requires that they are registered for at least nine credit hours of graduate-level courses per term. These courses will be charged at the graduate tuition rate.

    To remain in the program, undergraduate students must maintain a 3.25 GPA at Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ and be progressing steadily toward graduation.

    Advantages

    • Reduction in the total number of courses required to get both the bachelor and master degrees (students may count nine credits towards both undergraduate and graduate requirements)
    • Ability to take up to nine graduate credits at the undergraduate tuition rate

    The graduate courses which may be taken during the undergraduate program that can also be applied toward the undergraduate degree requirements must be approved by your academic advisor. Students must receive a grade of "C" or better in order to gain credit towards both the undergraduate and graduate degrees.

    Degree Requirements (BCE 135 credits + MCE 30 credits, nine credits double-counted)

    The course requirements for the five-Year Bachelor of Civil Engineering to Master of Civil Engineering include 135 credits of undergraduate course work and 30 credits of graduate coursework. Nine credits taken at the graduate-level will be double-counted towards the undergraduate degree, so that the total credits completed will be 155 credits. The course requirements are based on the current existing requirements for each program separately.  Note a minimum of 15 credits of the graduate degree must be courses offered only at the graduate level.
