5-Year Bachelor of Science with a Major in Biochemistry - Master in Environmental Engineering (BSBCHM-MEnvE)

Description

The College of Engineering & Science offers a combined Bachelor of Science with a major in Biochemistry - Master of Environmental Engineering program.  Incoming freshmen may be admitted directly into this accelerated program.

In order to complete both the BS (Biochemistry) and MEnvE degrees in five years, the student must (a) be well prepared as an incoming freshman, ready to take our engineering foundation courses; and (b) satisfy all the admission criteria (see below), and (c) maintain a 3.25 GPA in order to take graduate level courses while still an undergraduate student.

    Admission Into the Program

Qualifications for the 5-year program for incoming freshmen:

    • A minimum ACT composite score of 26, with a minimum of 22 in each section, and a minimum of 23 in the Mathematics section.  Or minimum SAT scores: 560 Mathematics, 560 ERW, and 1230 combined.
    • With ACT/SAT scores above: a high school grade point average of 3.4 overall on a 4.0 point scale, and the same for the combined mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology courses.
    • Without ACT/SAT scores: a high school grade point average of 3.6 overall on a 4.0 point scale, and the same for the combined mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology courses.
    • Students must place into appropriate-level freshmen courses at Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ in order to be able to complete both the bachelor and master degrees in five years.

Qualifications for the 5-year program for current students:

    • Students with a GPA of 3.25 can apply any time after they have completed at least 30 credits in the program.  Advising discussions should begin in the freshman year; calculus and some ENGR courses should be taken early in the program.
    • Students should be on track to complete their undergraduate degree in four years. (Students who may take longer  should consult with their financial aid counselor and be aware the time to complete both degrees may extend more than five years.)

    Additional Information:

If accepted into the program, students may take up to nine graduate credits in their fourth year that will count towards both undergraduate and graduate requirements.

In their fifth year, after completing the bachelor's degree, students should register as full-time graduate students, which requires registration of at least nine graduate credits per term. These courses will be charged at the graduate tuition rate.

To remain in the program, undergraduate students must maintain a minimum 3.25 GPA at Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ and be progressing steadily toward graduation.

    Advantages

    • Reduction in the total number of courses and possibly time required to get both the bachelor and master degrees (students may count nine credits towards both undergraduate and graduate requirements)
    • Ability to take up to nine graduate credits at the undergraduate tuition rate

The graduate courses, taken during the undergraduate program that can also be applied toward the undergraduate degree requirements, must be approved by your academic advisor. Students must receive a grade of "C" or better in order to earn credit towards both the undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Program Requirements - Bachelor of Science with a Major in Biochemistry—to Master of Environmental Engineering (BS 126 credits + MEnvE 30 credits, nine credits double-counted)

In order to qualify to take graduate credit in the fifth year, students must complete the mathematics and engineering courses listed below, by the end of the fourth year.

Biochemistry students wishing to take the Master of Environmental Engineering program who are not in the 5-year program may seek admission into the MEnvE on condition of completing the Mathematics and Engineering courses below before taking graduate coursework.
